The difference between a fence that lasts fifteen years and one that leans after a single gale is almost entirely down to the fitting — and specifically the bit nobody sees. Ben fits fences across South Wales the way they should be fitted.
Good fence fitting is groundwork first. Posts go at least a third of their height into the ground — a minimum of 600mm, deeper for gates and corners — and are concreted in, not knocked into a shallow hole and hoped for. Get that right and the fence shrugs off the weather; get it wrong and no amount of nice boards on top will save it. That single detail is the most common reason a cheap fence fails early.
On top of solid posts, the fitting is in the detail: rails squared and set, gravel boards keeping the timber up off the wet ground, boards strained tight and overlapped, and the whole line run true so it looks as straight as it holds.
