Roughly, a fencing price breaks into materials, groundwork and labour. Materials cover the posts (their size and treatment), the boards or panels, rails, gravel boards, fixings and any gates. A cheap quote usually saves money on the first two: thinner posts, shallower holes, no gravel boards.

Two quotes for "6ft fencing" can be a world apart — one is deep concreted posts, gravel boards and board-by-board closeboard built to last twenty years; the other is a panel dropped into a shallow hole that leans in two.
